A Poem A Day

Just Like That

And just like that
Babies are born
Carefully and cautiously

Dressing and
Educating and
Feeding them becomes mom’s new job.

Going to school plays and soccer games,
Having family fun nights,
Imagining a life where they’re always this little.

Just like that
kids become adults
living and loving and learning alone.

Moms call with questions about their
New lives in their new big
Open apartments.

Parents and their not so babies
Quietly talking on the phone
Reminiscing about their past.

Suddenly, just like that, moms die and
Tears fall down their babies’ faces, hidden
under blankets and behind closed doors.

Visions of their childhoods in their heads
Wishing to have their mommy back.
Xanax and dope and coke taking her place.

Young, and then just like that, dead.
Zooming through life, just to be with mommy again.
